married Charlotte Parfitt according to the forms of the Church of Scotland, at Westbourne Villa, Ayr, 6 October 1886. He was 30, she was 22.

They emigrated to New Zealand pretty soon after marrying, as first child
Robert Andrew Thomson b 22 September 1887 at Napier NZ.

second child Evangeline Mary Eliza Thomson followed in October 1889, also born at Napier, NZ.

Matthew is listed in the Electoral roll for Hawke’s Bay, Napier in 1890, but then killed in April 1892.

The couple’s third child was born possibly after Matthew’s death, and named for him – Matthew Auld Thomson.

After this accident, his family returned to England. Incoming passenger lists on the Rimutaka on 1 Aug 1892 have Thomson, Charlotte, aged 26; Thomson, R A 4 years; Thomson, Eva, aged 2 years; Thomson, Matthew, aged 6 months.

in the 1901 census, Charlotte Thomson was living with 9 year old Matthew Auld Thomson in Fore St, Heavitree, Devon.

Charlotte remarried in 1902 – to Alfred Hitchcock (no, not that one!) In the 1911 Census the couple were living in Birmingham with Matthew, then aged 18.

In 1916 Matthew enlisted for the British Armed Forces for service in WW1. He was a motor engineer, living at 18 Avenue Rd, Grimsbury Banbury, Oxfordshire. He gave his date of birth as 6 Dec 1897.

In the 1921 census he was living with his mother and stepfather in Warwickshire, listed as an out of work motor engineer. He died in 1937 and is buried with his mother(who died in 1957) in St Augustine’s Burial Ground, at Clutton, Somerset.
